Working among indigenous communities is often challenging. The differences in culture, harsh climates and remote locations can cause many missionaries to spend long periods of time far from their extended families and urban centers. The high cost of transportation and the lack of a team to carry on the work in their absence only add to the difficulty.
The Missionary Support Network is an initiative designed to strengthen connections between intercultural and interdenominational workers in the field. It provides a space where missionaries can rest, receive training and openly share their struggles and challenges in a safe and supportive environment. The network also offers counseling from retired mentors with extensive field experience and medical consultations with physical and mental health professionals.
Each year, we gather colleagues and friends from different ministries for a dedicated week of training and encouragement. Together, we explore relevant topics such as security in missions, financial stewardship and spiritual growth. We also focus on themes that nurture the heart of each individual, including identity in Christ and a lifestyle of worship. We are constantly seeking new ways to support, inspire and catalyze the work of those serving in these communities.
For many of these workers this gathering is the only vacation they have away from the field. Because of this we intentionally create moments for families to relax have fun and reflect together. We also make space for them to share their victories and challenges knowing this allows us to grow as a family. It reminds us to pray for one another and to recognize that we are not alone in facing hardships or seasons of drought in the field.
